A BRIEF HISTORY OF GMC
The GMC brand has been owned by GM for more than a century, but the similarity in their two names is a bit of a coincidence. The Grabowsky Motor Company was founded by brothers Max and Morris in Detroit in 1900, some eight years before it was purchased by General Motors (although the brothers’ business had been renamed the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company beforehand).
At first, GM positioned its GMC division to focus on the commercial trucking industry, a segment in which the brand continues to compete today. However, as retail customers began to discover just how helpful trucks could be as daily drivers, GMC models began appealing to the general public. The early 1960s marked the launch of the GMC Sierra nameplate, and in the 1970s, the brand even went as far as selling a car-based open-bed coupe that was similar to the legendary Chevrolet El Camino and known as the GMC Caballero.
