Kia is a Korean transportation pioneer that was born as the Kyungsung Precision Industry and built its country's first mass-produced bicycles beginning in 1951. Mazda-licensed trucks and cars came next, in 1962 and 1974. It wasn’t until the launch of the Kia Sephia in 1993 that the company evolved to designing and manufacturing its own cars. That didn’t last long, however, as Kia was swept up by the global financial crisis of the late 1990s and bought out by its rival, the Hyundai Motor Company. Today, Kia remains a division of Hyundai but with its own distinct design identity that’s bolstered by a strong U.S. manufacturing presence for both brands.
