The Nissan name came into being when its founder — Yoshisuke Aikawa — needed to list his original company — Nihon Sangyo — on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1933. Nissan wasn’t an automaker at the time, though. It actually dealt mostly with foundries and automobile parts. Also, when the company decided to start selling its own cars, it did so under the Datsun moniker. “Datsun” has its own convoluted history, but it basically honors the DAT vehicles of the 1910s, which were produced by a precursor to Nissan.
It was as Datsun that the company began exporting cars to the United States, starting with the ????. The 1970s saw Datsun’s sales expand with its popular compact truck, the original Z sports cars, and the B210 family of compacts. With the 1980s came Nissan’s first U.S. assembly plant, and it was only after that, in 1986, that the company began using its own name as its primary auto brand. Nissan moved to meet customer demand with new trucks — the Frontier and TITAN — in the 1990s and 2000s, and the Nissan Leaf launched the EV revolution to open the 2010s.
